Bottom line on ELK

ELK Studios builds fewer games and packs more rules into each one. Its slots aren't the ones to pick when you want to understand everything in five minutes. They reward players who read the rules, and they give you a menu, X-iter, for deciding how you enter the action. Pirots is the best example of that approach: a series that keeps adding layers to the same collecting engine. For mechanics fans, ELK is one of the most interesting studios on our site. For casual players, it can be a lot to take in.

Quality over quantity, by the studio's own account

ELK's about page gives 2013 as its founding year and sums up its approach as "quality over quantity". It describes three pillars:

  1. Strong concepts with themes that fit them.
  2. High-quality artwork and animation.
  3. Mathematical modelling based on statistical analysis and large data sets.

The same page lists its regulatory status. ELK holds a Great Britain Gambling Commission licence (account 40844) and a Malta Gaming Authority B2B critical gaming supply licence (MGA/B2B/605/2018, issued 27 February 2019). It also holds two second-class Romanian licences and is listed with Ontario's AGCO and Greece's Hellenic Gaming Commission.

Bought by Scientific Games, now Light & Wonder

On 1 December 2021, Scientific Games announced that it had acquired ELK Studios, describing it as a Stockholm-based developer. The announcement named Wild Toro II, Katmandu and Cygnus as hit releases, and highlighted the X-iter tool. It didn't disclose the terms of the deal.

In March 2022, Scientific Games announced that it would do business as Light & Wonder. ELK is therefore now part of Light & Wonder, which planned to take ELK's games into the US and Canadian markets.

X-iter: choosing your entry point

X-iter is ELK's own system. Its about page names it, and the 2021 acquisition announcement describes it as a way for players to jump into the action through a selection of predefined special modes. Each mode costs a different multiple of the base bet and changes what the next spins can do.

The Pirots 5 page shows how far the range goes. It offers five entry points, from a 3x bet that gives more than four times the normal chance of triggering the bonus, to a 250x bet that goes straight to the Super Bonus. On our free demo, those costs are paid in virtual coins. The principle is still worth knowing: a higher entry price buys a different spread of results, not a better long-run return.

Pirots and the CollectR engine

Pirots is ELK's signature series, built on the CollectR mechanic. Four collector birds sit on a grid and collect adjacent gems of their own colour. Each collection feeds progress that can make the grid bigger.

ELK's page describes a 6x6 grid that can expand, with Captain Blackfeather turning birds into gems. There's a Cursed Temple coin game when the grid is cleared, and a rotating Secret Door that moves symbols around. Our review focuses on how the temple traps interrupt collecting sequences. It also notes that the 96% top RTP is higher than the 94% default recorded for earlier numbered chapters. The 10,000x cap matches both ELK's own page and the rest of the series.

How ELK handles RTP and volatility

ELK doesn't publish one studio-wide RTP. Our Pirots 5 review records several RTP versions of the game, with 96% as the top setting. So, as with most modern studios, the return can depend on the version you're looking at. The studio's about page says its mathematical models are based on statistical analysis. We haven't found a studio-wide volatility policy, so the Medium-High rating above applies to Pirots 5 only.

Who ELK Studios suits

  • Mechanics enthusiasts who enjoy learning how a feature engine works.
  • Players who like choice over how they reach a bonus, thanks to X-iter.
  • Series followers, because each Pirots chapter builds on the last.

It's a weaker fit for players who want quick, simple rules or low volatility.

Strengths and drawbacks

Pros

  • A distinctive engine, CollectR, developed across a whole series.
  • X-iter gives a clear, priced menu of entry modes.
  • Licences are published with numbers on the studio's about page.

Cons

  • Rules pages are long, and the games take time to learn.
  • Several RTP versions exist per game, so figures can vary between versions.
